Napier wrap-up

Hello all,

Another Cutty Sark Regatta has wrapped up, and this one was spectacular!

Five groups were competing - us, Britannia, PBeach, Westshore and New Lynn from Auckland.

We haven't seen New Lynn for a number of years, so it was good to have a look at the group and size them up.  There must be something peculiar in the water up there as I couldn't really tell where the Venturers ended and the Scouts began.  Maybe next year we ought to check ID?

The weather for sailing was fabulous, with some light winds in the morning picking up toward afternoon.  We made the most of it with three races on Saturday, and that was after some Ironman competitions in the morning before the wind got up.  Dinner was well-earned that night!

Sunday was chockablock as well, with the rowing races, seamanship tests, another set of kayaking races and finally the centipede race.  By the time all was said and done, we hit the road home at around five and I'm sure set a new land speed record in the Scout Convoy Towing Boats category.  I hope Britannia and PBeach have arrived home safely and ducked the traffic.

The hospitality shown by the Westshore crew and the catering team was second-to-none.  If anyone went hungry this weekend, they must have been at the wrong regatta.

Some of the events we picked up recognition for were:
  • Scout Ironman (third)
  • Scout Cutter Sailing (second)
  • Venturer Seamanship (second)
  • Scout Sunburst (first)
We are all very proud of your accomplishments - well done!
Special thanks have to go out to Grant, Derrick and Phil who were our additional drivers, parent help and Scout wranglers.
And consider this: our Venturer crew picked up second in the seamanship even though there were only three of them, and for Sven and Adam this was their first regatta ever!  Fantastic job!

My photos have been posted to the gallery.  If you have your own you'd like me to add, please email me or create a CD.

For Scouts this week, we have Rowan's Chief Scout plan, which is to meet at 5:30pm at the Pauatahanui walk at the far end of the inlet, explore the wetland and hopefully spot some wildlife.  Weather's not looking too flash for Thursday but we'll keep an eye on it.

Coming up this Sunday is our last regatta of the season, the Worser Bay Sunburst Regatta.
Please email me indicating if you will be attending, and if your parent(s) can tow a trailer.
It's an anticipated 9am start which means we'll need to pick up boats from the den at around 0745am.  The good news is that they are still ready for the road and just need the masts tied on.
There aren't really any facilities on site which means you'll need to bring a packed lunch and snacks plus all your wet gear

And finally, a personal note.
Scouting for me has always had a strong family aspect.  It seems like half our troop are brothers or sisters, and the other half have siblings in Keas, Cubs or Venturers.  And when I look around at the kids on a Thursday night, I can see that we are far more than just a group of people who get together and mess about with boats.  In uncountable ways, the entire troop is a family.

I saw this family come together again over the weekend, in a thousand little moments which made me smile.  The trophies and pennants we won are nice, but it's the scenes of family which are the real taonga for me.  Rowan putting the fluoro war paint on anyone sitting still long enough.  Sven playing with Jasper's little sister Jemma at the water's edge.  Kate Powell's willingness to throw herself into anything she could.  Joe fighting that crazy tidal flow to swim for the Ironman and absolutely everyone cheering him on.

The past four years have been a gift to me, and it is now time to pass that gift on.  I am stepping down as troop leader after the Worser Bay Regatta, and retiring from the troop.
To all past and present parents, Thank You for lending us your kids.  It has been a pleasure and a privilege to watch them grow, learn and sail.  This troop is blessed with outstanding leaders, excellent resources, a strong future and most of all, you.

looking ahead a couple of weeks

Hello all,

So this week we have the knots/lashings/raftbuilding to have some fun with.  Please remember wet gear so we can sea trial our creations.

Next week (21 Feb) the programme says Rowing, but I think a bit of sailing practice would be beneficial, seeing as we have two days of regatta that weekend.

The week after that (28 Feb) calls for Crew Overboard.  However, I have booked us in for dragonboating instead.  This will be highly weather-dependent, so if it looks not-so-good we may be back to the Crew Overboard.  We'll try to get at least a day's notice at any rate.

Cheers,
R

Ready, set, GO!

Hello all,

Fantastic evening and a great start to the term.  Lots of good fun on the water in kayaks and tubes, photos up in the gallery AND on that Facebook thing!

Welcome to our new crew:
Ben
Andre (brother of Marcus the Younger)
Dylan (friend of Marcus)
George
Elliot (brother of Lewis)

I did a little bit of watch shuffling last night just to show our new guys where they be positioned.  I expect we'll have a fuller roster next week and we'll do a proper job of it so everyone knows where they will be.  One other change of note, Ollie was promoted to Assistant Coxswain of Aft Port.

The watchlists and term programme will be emailed out in a few days; please print them off so you can see what we're up to ahead of time.

Things are beginning to ramp up for Jamboree 2014.  The Scouts national office has put together some resources that everyone should be very interested in and they will be mostly on Facebook this time around.

First is a public page where signup is not necessary:
http://www.facebook.com/NewZealandScoutJamboree

Next is a group page where Scouts 13+years can sign up.  You'll need your Scout Membership Number to confirm the join request:
http://www.facebook.com/groups/NZScoutJamboree.Youth/
If you don't have your Membership Number, please call the national office.

See you next week!

Great Onepoto Raft Race: 17 February

Hello all,

The date and time for the raft race has been set: 12 noon at Onepoto Bay on Sunday 17 February.

Apparently the TBay land Scouts actually train for this event, so we'll have to take a bit of time out to practice lashings and raft construction.  If anyone has a rubber tube at home and wouldn't mind donating it to the cause, please bring it around.

Past years have been heaps of fun, check the photo gallery for pictures!

Cheers,

Joint sailing day confirmed for tomorrow

Hello all,

I have confirmed with Britannia that we'll be sailing with them tomorrow (Sunday) beginning at 1pm.

If you are wanting to participate, please be at the Britannia Scout den at Evans Bay by around 1 to help rig boats.  No need for a lifejacket as we can use theirs.
Location: https://maps.google.co.nz/maps?ie=UTF8&cid=117741155523164200&q=Sea+Cadet+Corps&iwloc=A&gl=NZ&hl=en_uk

The forecast is looking reasonable with easterly winds of about 5 or 6 knots, temperature around 18, and some good sun.

Hard to say when we'll wrap up, but off the water by 4-430 is a reasonable guess.

See you there!
