Onepoto Regatta

Fantastic weather and a fantastic attitude brought us an unexpected result.  Victory at our home regatta!

There were some superb individuals in all age groups. Some for their ability to do the competition stuff really well, and some who were just there to be involved and have fun.  Smiles were witnessed all around.

Some special mentions (and these are certainly not all as I am only one person and can't be everywhere)

  • The venturers for just getting on and doing it, whenever they were asked, whatever they were asked.
  • Ruan and Rosie producing a photo finish in the Intermediate Sunburst race, which gave the group the win, whichever way it went.
  • Our Juniors in the rowing, pouring out heart and soul over the long course and even getting the technique right
  • Hannah and Bronson for bringing home Kayaking victories.
  • Zoe and Maddy for helping the Leaders claim a Cutter sailing victory
I said this last year and I will repeat it this year.  Ngati Toa as a group really pull together at these events and just get everything done.

Onepoto Regatta 2020

First regatta of the season!  What a brilliant start to the season.  And the weather?  Randall put it well : "The weather for Onepoto was best described as 'Wellington' with Saturday being just shy of perfect, Sunday being a drizzly mess and Monday a bit of both."

Our Juniors produced some really memorable results, including winning the Seamanship event on their first time out (a credit especially to their coxswain Matt).  And our intermediates who won Iron Scout, Rowing and Cutter Sailing.

I was especially proud of the way Ngati Toa as a troop got together to get boats ready and put away afterwards.  This was something I witnessed that was missing in the other troops.  It makes me very proud.  Thank you.

I have included a few pictures below.  More are available here

The results look pretty good for us.  We achieved a solid second over the whole weekend with St James taking weekend honours.  Some very good individual performances and a strong showing from our intermediates, made up a little for the small turnout amongst our seniors.

2020 Prize Giving

Well, prize giving was a hoot!  With two scouts and four venturers in attendance, they only just out numbered the five leaders who were there as well.

We did reasonably well overall, getting a large number of second places overall with a fair number of firsts thrown in.  One highlight of the night, was that Xavier, who actually won the Onepoto Rowing got to collect the Kurt Hansen Plate, the first time this trophy has been awarded.

One omission which was pointed out after the prize giving was that the results from the Worser Bay regatta were not included in these proceedings, but we all know what they were. (If you don't have a look at the write up here.)

Below is the collection of trophies and certificates.

Happy Leaders holding our Silverware

From the pictures above, the highlights for me are the fact that
  • we brought home five trophies, more than we have in the last two years (three in 2018 and none last year)
  • two of the trophies we won were for the Onepoto Regatta, our own.
  • our intermediates pulled off a win overall for the season in their sunburst racing
  • we were recognised as the biggest improvers last year
I personally am very pleased with the results and hopefully we will all celebrate our success.

Onepoto Regatta 2019

This labour weekend we kicked off the Regatta season with the usual style.  The Onepoto regatta is a full weekend of all the Sea Scout major activities: Sailing, Rowing, Kayaking, Iron Scout and Seamanship.  We also did our usual camp on the domain over night.  This year a change in dinner providers also saw a change in menu, with the Ngati Toa parents excelling themselves in producing what looked to me like 100+ pizzas.

Unfortunately not many photographs were taken of the events, but those that we do have are here
