For Parents Only - Jamboree is officially full-on

Hello all,

I finally have the first good opportunity to get out of the hot Hamilton sun and provide you an update from the Jamboree site.

Camp setup went very well, and we had a completely livable site by teatime on Tuesday.  The kitchen rig we built is fantastic, and we seem to be the only troop with solar generating capacity.  Score one for Richard and Phil!

The kids sorted themselves out nicely, and the Ngati Toa Social Club resumed operations immediately ;-)

Jamboree is a huge event, something you have a hard time grasping until you stand on the hillside and see well over 1000 tents in rows and blocks over an entire valley floor.  Catering, sanitation, infrastructure, activities, communications... astonishing!  I've heard of a few logistical hiccups apparently, but overall nothing has really affected us.

Yesterday was the first real day of scheduled activities, and some of the patrols received a good workout.
Dougal took his group in a 12km tramp over an extinct volcano, and Lynette's kids had an Amazing Race-style excursion into Cambridge.  Other groups have built structures, got muddy, climbed walls and crossed the Waikato on a flying fox.  And to say that badge trading has been intense just doesn't do it justice.  In the middle of this instant town there is an instant subculture bordering on a black market!

Tonight is New Years' Eve, and there is a special programme planned for tonight, including a very late-night option for the older Scouts.  The opening ceremony was very youth-oriented, and I suspect tonight's events will take it up a couple of notches.

More updates hopefully tomorrow (after a late wake-up)

Onepoto wrap-up and the plan for this week

Guys,

A fantastic showing at the Onepoto regatta yesterday!  We cleaned up most of the events, which is great, especially under such variable wind conditions.

One of the most satisfying aspects of attending these events is seeing (again) that no matter who we team up to crew, we do well.
This can only mean one thing: all of you have the skills to handle a boat and win races. Fantastic!
====
Jamboree patrol leaders:  please call around to all the members of your patrol this week - you need to come up with a soft toy mascot for your patrol (but remember Kevin the gorilla/monkey/primate is off-limits!).

====
So since this Thursday is the last night of term, we thought it was time for a proper fun night.
We'll get in some kayak and rowing races, followed with a BBQ to warm you up.  Please bring a plate to share.

Parents, you are welcome to stay (as always).  I'm not saying you'll be shanghai'd into a rowing race, but I'm not saying you won't, either...
Might be your only opportunity to show up your kids!

Cheers,
Randall

Reminder about Onepoto Regatta this Sunday

Hi guys,

Just a quick reminder that the Onepoto Regatta will be happening this Sunday, beginning at 9:30.

I'll be asking everyone on Thursday if they plan to attend, so please confer with your parents so I can have a firm answer on Thursday.

We'll be bringing all the boats again, so could we please have a few drivers with towbars volunteer to meet us at the den early on Sunday morning.

Thanks

Also, remember that Thursday night is gear check night - review the list posted on the website and try to get it into your green bag.

Activities this week

Hi all,

First off, what a great tramp we had up to the Knob last week - the weather was perfect and the views were even better.  Plus, we picked up about a large bag's worth of rubbish from the track, so well done!  I've posted some photos from the night up on the gallery site.

This week, Jamboree preparation gets into gear.  We'll be checking some tents, sorting equipment, doing a bit of painting and a number of other little tasks.

The major task, however, is to check the gear list, pack your green bag, and bring it to Scouts on Thursday night.  We'll be evaluating everyone's stuff and seeing just how well we travel.  Don't worry about bringing toiletries - those are small and relatively light - just focus on the clothing and other gear.

See you then!

Colonial Knob tramp preparation

Hi all,

To ensure we all have an excellent adventure up the hill and back down, we need to prepare for expected and unexpected situations.

First and foremost: clothing.
No matter what the forecast calls for, bring a rain jacket.  The Knob can be windy, misty, cool or all of the above all at once.
Layers are the key.  Wear at least two decent layers in addition to your rain jacket so that if it is nice and warm, you can pull one off until things cool down.
This is a tramp on some challenging terrain.  Anyone wearing jandals or crocs won't be leaving the carpark.  Your shoes need to have grippy soles, end of story.
Also, it's an excellent idea to bring a small pack for the second and third items below.

Second: food.
Bring some scroggin or muesli bars plus at least one water bottle.  I don't care what Bear Grylls does, our Scouts will not be licking dew off the grass or snacking on sheep stuck in a bog.  It goes without saying that we will not be leaving any trash on the track.

Third: light.
We are starting at 6pm to give ourselves plenty of time to get up and back before dark.  Nevertheless, please bring a decent torch.

Finally: the reward.
This is a good trek, no question, but the reward is a magnificent 360-degree view and camaraderie along the trail.

This is our last week before getting into pre-Jamboree prep and practice, so let's make it a memorable one!

Please meet at the Camp Elsdon (marker A on the map) trailhead by 6pm

AGM and Kapiti Regatta reminders

Hello all,

Just a few quick reminders about events in the very near future.

Our Group AGM is scheduled for 7:30pm on Tuesday 30 November at the den.
This is an opportunity for all parents in any of the Ngati Toa sections (Keas, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, etc) to learn about what is happening organisationally.
It's also an opportunity to get involved in the committee!

====
The Kapiti Regatta is on for this weekend, Sunday 28 November.  Those who have committed to attend please watch your email for further details!

====
We have a tramp up to the summit of Colonial Knob scheduled for 2 December.  We'll check with the weather a few days ahead, but let's please plan for a 6pm start at the base of the track.

====
This week's activities will include a talk by a biosecurity officer from Greater Wellington Regional Council, and kayak T-rescue practice.  Bring your wet gear!

Cheers,
Randall

Bowling + Fun = Success!

Guys,

I was wandering around Strike last night absolutely bowled over (sorry) by the number of people enjoying themselves.

Just seeing so many smiles, entire families letting loose on the pins, friendly rivalries, and good times made the fundraising aspect quite secondary.  What I saw last night was a true expression of Community, and we should be very proud.

We haven't haven't gone to the bank just yet, but here are the initial results:
Tickets sold: 383
Net proceeds to the troop: $1,907

A special You Sold How Many? award goes to the Beddow family for chalking up 39 tickets.  Fantastic!  Well-earned Whittaker's chocolate coming their way.
There is a tough competition for second place, but we'll let you know when the judges have been sufficiently bribed to render a decision.

What's good too is that I think Strike did pretty well out of this, compared to a typical Tuesday night.  I certainly hope that we can partner up again.

Thanks to Ross Pritchard for putting together a great event and a huge fundraiser!

Everyone's arms can rest up this week, as there will be no Scouts this Thursday.
Quiz Night is coming up quickly on 6 November!

Phone book wrap-up and new term information

This was one of those events where we all showed real spirit, put in the hours and got the job done.  Fantastic effort from everyone!

Thank you to all the parents, Scouts, Leaders, family members and friends who gave your time and energy this weekend to get the phone books out.

We had some unique challenges this year - delays, grumpy neighbours, and smaller space.  But in the end we got through it all and our community appreciates it.

===

Term 4 begins this week; please remember that in Terms 4 and 1 we begin at 6:30pm.
There is a very important parent meeting this week from 6:30pm to 7pm at the den where we will be explaining the Jamboree finances.

===

The Scout activity this week will be boat preparation - the cutters need a bit more sanding, then varnish and some paint repairs.  Please come to Scouts with work clothes in addition to your uniform.

===

Finally, we have two pallets of phone books, tables, rubbish bags and the BBQ still at the warehouse.  We would like to clear all that out this week, so we are asking that any parents who have trailers available please bring them on Thursday night.

Again, a huge Thank You for another successful phone book operation!

Sizzle at Bunnings on Sunday

Thanks to everyone who braved the surly wind to help out at the sizzle yesterday.  Again, we raised nearly $400, going straight into the bank for Jamboree.

Congratulations to Barry from Whitby who won the jellybean guessing contest - he guessed 386, and the official count was 387!

Phone book delivery

It is that time of year again - the telephone book deliveries.

We have the White and Yellow Pages to be delivered in the weekend of Saturday, 2nd October and Sunday, 3rd October - or until there are no more streets left to deliver to.

We will be packaging the telephone books up on Friday, 1st October from 6pm onwards.

This will be at the Todd Park complex (behind Bunning's) - actual warehouse space to be advised.  You will be fed!!! We need someone to man the BBQ and can I have some volunteers to do baking (you will be reimbursed)

Commercial Deliveries will start on Friday, 1st October - if anyone can help with this let me know - this includes Schools and Businesses.

We need as many helpers as possible.

This is our only major fundraiser for the year and the money goes a long way to support your children with the activities that they do within their group.
For the scouts going to Jamboree all the scout phone book money is going towards that fund.

Remember, this is the first weekend of the school holidays, so if you are available we need you to help out please.

Many thanks
Michelle

Garage sale results, and what's on for this Thursday

Hi guys,

The final results are in from the garage sale over the weekend, and I think we did a fantastic job.

Overall sales from the goods, sausages and cake table was a bit over $908.
Subtracting figures for float, signage, sausages and so on, we end up with net proceeds of $756

Huge thanks go out to the parents, leaders and Scouts who put in the hard yards to make this event happen, and make it a success!
===

As for this Thursday night, we had scheduled a visit to the Carter Observatory, but unfortunately they could not book us in until later in October.  Nevertheless, we may be doing a little stargazing as Dougal has very generously offered to host a BBQ and campfire at his property out near Moonshine Hill Road.  I will be providing a map (ultra-triple-checked; I've learned my lesson) as well as written directions from Dougal.

Please assemble at the den at 6:30pm, which should get us out to Dougal's by 7pm.  Any parents who can take a few extra scouts out and back are welcome to join us

Great row tonight

Guys,

Can't believe our luck with the weather tonight - absolutely perfect for a row.

For not having picked up the oars for a few months, we put on a really good show.

Just a reminder, the rowers are facing backward and the cox may not be able to see over the bow adequately.  So when we have a spotter up front, they have to be facing forward to call obstacles like boats, buoys, rocks and so on.  There were a couple near collisions tonight because there wasn't enough communication between bow and helm.

Oh, and it seems the bung was left out of 219, but we'll just chalk that up to being out of practice...

In all, though, a great night and we'll let you know what's up for next week.

This Thursday night

Hi guys,

The forecast for this Thursday night is not looking too flash right now, but we haven't pulled the pin on the night row just yet.  So officially, it's still on, but as someone once said, "Be Prepared."
Thus, please have a quick read of the Boating Gear List (http://ngatitoaseascouts.blogspot.com/p/boating-gear-list.html) and get prepared for a row.
Primarily, you'll need wetsuit, splash jacket, beanie, gloves, water/beach shoes.  Showing up with just jeans or trackies mean you will sit on the beach after making the leaders a pot of tea.
Also, we have noted an increasing number of Scouts popping by the kitchen, grabbing a cup for a drink and subsequently dropping the cup in the sink to be washed by the dish fairies.  From now forward, please bring your own water bottle with your name on it.
Cheers,
Randall

Deadlines, notices and requests

Hi guys, lots to cover tonight.

First, a reminder that the night row has been pushed back to next week, and we'll be building bridges this week.

Second, the deadline for showing an interest in the ski trip to Whakapapa will be Thursday 2 Sept.  There are about ten or so spaces left.  Consents will be distributed this week or next.

Third, there are a few timeslots left for the sausage sizzle planned for 11 Sept outside Mad Butcher.  Please have a look at the roster (http://ngatitoaseascouts.blogspot.com/p/staffing-roster-for-sizzle-11-sept.html) and pick a time if you haven't already.

Also, we have a garage sale planned for 21 August at the den.  We again need the roster (http://ngatitoaseascouts.blogspot.com/p/staffing-roster-for-garage-sale-21.html) filled out for for the Friday night sorting, pricing and arranging as well as staffing the tables and BBQ on Saturday.  We need all types of everything: clothes, toys, books, music, tools, appliances, you name it.  Items can be brought to the den tomorrow night or next Thursday 19 August.

I know this may seem like a lot of asking, but we are coming up to a busy time, and we absolutely need all hands on deck to help keep down our Jamboree costs.

Thanks,
Randall

This weekend's Kapiti Coastal Zone Campfire

Sorry for the late notice, but there is a Kapiti Coastal Zone Campfire planned for this weekend.

I've just been informed that the venue has changed - it was set for Tatum Park, but it is now at the Paraparaumu Memorial Hall, corner of Tutanekai Street and Aorangi Road (just off S.H.1)

The start time is still 6pm

Book your time for the sizzle

Hi all,

We have booked a sausage sizzle fundraiser for 11 September at the Mad Butcher in Porirua.

All the materials are provided for us, but we do need Leaders, parents and Scouts to offer up a little time to make this a success.

I have posted a roster to the left where you can sign up; first replies will get first choice of timeslots.

Cheers,
Randall

Hello all,

Just a friendly reminder that all watch coxswains need to have transportation arrangements for Thursday night finalised by tonight!
You need to have called each member of your watch to find out if they are attending, and if they need a ride or can offer a ride.  You need to ensure that everyone is accounted for, and everyone has a ride (including yourselves!).

Coxes, please email me at this address with a status update by 9pm tonight (note the big bold red text)

Scouts: Bon voyage

Well Guys

What a wonderful way to end 5 ½ years with NTSS as a Leader (4 ½ as troop Leader). Huge thanks for the goodies – my liver and waist line will suffer, which is why I intend to share most with you over the next few months.

Look guys – its been a ball. Watching kids grow into young adults with super brains and leadership skills attached to great personalities, senses of humour  and friends (some more attached than others). Watching kids that are scared of a glass of water learn to conquer water and become proficient boaties and owners of great skills. Is neat to think that the Leaders and I have helped shape these great kids.

Parents – what a great bunch. The time you put into your kids results in great rewards; the time you put into other peoples kids brings even greater rewards with lifetime friendships developing.

As Phil says, I won’t be lost. Coaching sailing is my great love, so might do a little of that for Scouts, will do a huge amount of that for Paremata; I will be at the regattas because the boys and my extended yachty kids will all be venturers; I will be assisting to get all to the Jamboree and I might become a bossy Committee member. And then there is skiing!!

It is not goodbye, simply see you same place, same time but not as the boss.

So from this dolphin leaving Planet NTSS, “So long, and thanks for all the fish”.

Roger

Sea Scout prizegiving - huge success

Guys

Thanks to Phil, Nicky and Michael for joining me at the prize-giving at St James Sea Scout Den tonight. Lucky they did because there was no way I could have walked the total distance to pick up the 28 trophies (out of 32) and to carry them all to the car.

Huge congratulations to all of you. Fantastic effort, fantastic teams, fantastic skills, fantastic kids (and the oldies in the Open as well).

We have been challenged to win all 32 next year. That will be difficult because we will have to convert at least one of our cutters back to an old rig. But perhaps …

Cheers

Roger

Scouts: Food Safety Authority Award.

Guys

Well I made it through the night without interruption. The first hurdle has been passed, and After Port’s victory is looking more sound.

A huge thanks to Phil – he put in many hours organizing the menu, quantity surveying, shopping and worrying. Also to the other leaders for assistance with setup and crowd control. To all you parents for risking their health!!!!

And to the Scouts for being game enough to give this a go. Everyone helped, it looked like all had fun.

Lessons learned?
·         You can do it, cooking is easy and great fun

·         Did you follow the recipes carefully? No – only one watch put herbs in their burger. The chutney remained unopened.

·         Did you look at the pictures?  No - Only one watch properly stacked the dessert pancakes.

·         Did it matter? Not really. Lesson – follow your heart or instincts. They are usually right even if they don't follow the instructions.

Equipment (labelled)
3 chopping boards per watch (minimum)
6 plastic or glass mixing bowls (1 each)
2 wooden spoons
2 electric frying pans or mini BBQ (in addition to provided BBQ)
1 hand egg-beater or electric beater/processor
2 BBQ slices for turning food
  6 Tea towels (minimum)
  2 Hand towels (minimum)

Scouts: MasterChef Scouts PARENTS

Parents

The Scouts will be treating their families to a culinary delight on Thursday 24 June.

Unlike the last few years when the Watches have cooked for their parents at a house, this year Parents and families are invited to the Scout Den at 7pm where the Scouts will be cooking and presenting a three course Cordon Bleu meal in the style of MasterChef.

Scouts: Last night

Hi Guys

Well what an interesting night. Matariki was a little crowded for the first group but the one performer they listened too before departing to the squid and earthquake exhibits was brilliant. What caught my eye is that Te Papa is always changing so that one can never go there enough. The radio sculptures caught my eye. Good news was that we lost just one person – a Leader and driver!!

The trip to Beacon Hill will have taught most of you a lesson – always prepare yourself before going. Who else checked that the Leader’s instructions were correct? I didn’t. I assumed it was right. And we all know that “assume” makes an ASS of U and ME. Having said that, being lost brings the team spirit into play, and I found a good co-navigator in my car. The silver lining to the dark cloud. And Beaacon Hill itself was brilliant – lots of boys toys and stories to share. Would be good for smaller groups to go back when the new building is finished.

Thanks Randall for suggesting and organising a great night. To you parents – apologies for the late return. Hope Phil put on a perfect cup of tea!!

Beacon Hill site visit follow-up

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to say thanks to all of you for making last night a success.

Linda made a point of telling me that you as a group were a pleasure to host; you handled yourselves extremely well, asked excellent questions, and seemed to appreciate the nature of this very important role.

Another huge thanks goes out to the parents who drove out to the wilds of Strathmore Park due to a poor map but still managed to get to the station.  I will take my flogging for this, deservedly ;-)

Well done, troop.

Program for 10 June 2010

Hi everyone,

The program for Thursday night will go approximately as follows:

We will split the troop up along sides; port = group 1, starboard = group 2

Leaving together from the den at around 6:40pm, group 1 will travel to Te Papa, and group 2 will go directly to Beacon Hill.  I will be at Beacon the entire night to shuffle everyone through.  There is a new exhibit at Te Papa that opens tomorrow celebrating Matariki, so up on level 4 in the marae there should be lots of activities.

At around 7:40 group 2 will go to Te Papa, and at 7:50 group 1 will go to Beacon Hill.

And at around 8:40, both groups will head back to the den, and we expect to be back right around 9pm.

I will have maps for all drivers, but below is a link to a Google map:

http://maps.google.co.nz/?ie=UTF8&ll=-41.329002,174.818401&spn=0.023848,0.04107&z=15

The Beacon Hill Harbourmaster Station is located at the very end of Bowes Crescent, above Ataturk Park.

Cheers,

Reminder about Beacon Hill site visit

Hi guys,

Just a reminder that we will be visiting the Beacon Hill Harbourmasters' station in Miramar this coming Thursday.

We will be meeting the Harbourmaster on duty, learning about what they do, and touring the station buildings.  And of course they will be happy to answer questions, so give it a bit of thought over the next few days.

I have asked all the coxswains to organise transportation for their watch, ideally in two vehicles.

Please be at the den ready to go at 6:30pm.  I will provide maps to all the drivers, and of course the drivers are welcome to join us.  The station is in a residential neighbourhood, so parking will be limited.

I'll ring up coxes on Tuesday night just to make sure we are all covered.

Cheers,
Randall

Scout Swimming Sports

A fantastic performance tonight by all Scouts, Cubs and Venturers at the Raumati pool!  Ngati Toa dominated the results board, but there was also an incredible level of team support and sportsmanship.  Well done to everyone, you should be proud!

Photos have been posted, including an experimental effort at including video.  Liam's first-place finish in the backstroke event has been saved for posterity.

Bring your creative brain this Thursday as we will be focusing on Bridges, Ladders and Structures.

Scouts: Jamboree entries

Guys

As previously discussed, Jamboree entries are now due along with the deposit.

I distributed the Jamboree Entry forms Thursday night. Please fill them in carefully and return to Scouts next Thursday night on NO LATER than Thursday fortnight (27 May). Please note the medical section and the food allergies sections. It is imperative that you don’t hold anything back.

We also need the $100 deposit, either e-banked to Scout a/c # 03 1533 0017408 00 or a cheque made out to NTSS. NTSS will then make a single payment to HO. Remember that we are going to fund-raise as much of the total fee as possible, and if we do well, will refund the deposit. But don’t hold your breath – a lot of hard work is required from all of you.

Lastly, as part of the budget, we need to ascertain travel requirements. Many of you go on holiday for Xmas and may be intending to drop your Scout(s) in Hamilton). Please feel free to. However, we need to know how many will require transport from Porirua so that we can cost out buses, trains, etc. We also need to know if any heading north on holiday can tow a trailer with camping gear.  We handed out a form to be returned as well.

Cheers

Roger

Please be at the Porirua Recreation Centre at 6:45pm in uniform.

Scouts: Thursday night, Anzac Day, and this last weekend.

Hi Guys

Yes, school holidays are over and Scouts starts again next Thursday night. Don’t forget that Scouts starts at 7:00pm for the next two terms and that full uniforms are required, not summer uniforms.  There will be a Watch reshuffle since Jareth and Anton have departed and we are setting things up for the next year. We will let you know the programme by Thursday.

ANZAC DAY – next Sunday, Don’t forget – COMPULSORY!!!  All attendees please bring a packet of biscuits or similar for morning tea at the Den.

Lastly, Scouts have been busy since Napier. Callum at Aviation School, Bridget at Caving School. Josh, Amberlee, Daniel and Hannah today completed a 3-day excursion as part of J & A’s Chief Scout Award requirements. Guess they will all give presentations this term.

Cheers

Scouts: ANZAC Day parade

Hi Guys

Just to remind you all that ANZAC Day is on Sunday 25 April and the NTSS Group has for several years been a large part of the Porirua morning parade and service.

Yes, it is voluntary but I would rather think that this is COMPULSORY for all Scouts with exceptions only for really, really good excuses – your own death, abducted by aliens (yeah right).

This year we will be accompanied by an 85 year old from Invercargill who was a fighter pilot with the NZAF 14th Squadron in the Pacific in WII. He was Venturer age, in fact a Jellicoe Sea Scout, when war broke out and signed up as soon as he “claimed” to be 18. Scary thought, eh? He is looking forward to, in fact proud to be able to, march with you in the Parade.

So details are 8:30 am (at the latest) to meet by the old Warehouse Stationary store on Lydney Place off Lyttleton Ave to March to the Parade start point at 8:40am (at the latest).  Please be on time, and dressed in full uniform – Jerseys, scarves, badge epaulettes, dark trousers or jeans and dark shoes.

Afterwards, we will head to the Den for morning tea and Scouts can go sailing in the cutters and Sunbursts if they wish – out to Plimmerton if the weather is good. Kayaks will no doubt hit the water as well.

Cheers

Napier: Lost clothing

Guys

There was a bag of last clothing returned from Napier. I recognize some Venturer apparel. Let me know if you are missing anything and we can let you in to see.

Roger

Napier: Pre-story

Guys
Here is a word from a YNZ judge over the disqualification issue in the Sunburst racing.

1.    In fleet racing it is the boats that race, protest and get penalised for rule infringements, rather than people. During a regatta, the crew of a boat can change (so long as that's permitted by the sailing instructions) but it's the same boat that is competing.

The Race Officer  therefore  correctly disqualified the winner #1796 (Josh/Finn) as all boats from that race had not finished, even though the winning crew had changed (Michael/Jono) for the next race.

Cheers

Roger

Scouts: Napier Roundup

Guys
What a great regatta!!!
Up-front, huge thanks:
·         To all the parents, Leaders and supporters that helped organize, drive, tow, feed, coral, fix and cheer on the kids. Was fantastic support. I hope you all had as much fun as the kids and I did. Hope you all got a shoulder massage in the spa as well (kids did,  I didn’t).
·         To Lynette, Janet, Kate and anyone else that helped with the catering – fantastic meals. And huge thanks to the Scouts who cooked breakfast both days. Taste-testing the bacon was a treat!!
·         To Diane – hope your foot is getting better.
·         To Janet and Joanne – thanks for looking after Diane. I had fun driving a grunty truck back. Suspect I got a few holiday snaps along the way.
·         To Ross for the firewood and the Navy for the Scout Coffee.

To you Scouts – wow, what a performance. Not just skills, but the comraderie, friendship, teamwork, support of each other, respect for all (most of the time) and what looked like to be smiles 100% of the time. Back to the skills;

·         1st Venturer and 1st Scout rowing, with the other NTSS crews looking fantastic even when sandwiched between wayward boats. The future looks great.
·         1st Venturer and 1st Scout cutter sailing, with our other crews pushing the top, older, crews.
·         2nd Venturer and 2nd Scout Sunburst, victories overshadowed by flagrant rule infringements and collisions by other competitors and a weird disqualification after a solid two wins.  Take home message #1 – know the rules, remember the other boats don’t know the rules, avoid trouble!!  Take home message #2 – remember how good you were, remember that our boats finished top four in most races. Be proud!
·         1st Venturer and 1st Scout kayaking, nothing more to say there.
·         2nd Venturer and 1st Scout ironman, Tarapunga defending their crown by two metres. Fantastic battle!!!
·         Seamanship, hmmm, with both teams perfect on land, with rowing skills and style, with patient transfer from boat to shore and patient first aid. BUT … what happened during recovery from the water … ?
·         1st centipede race, with Janet the wettest supporter.

Again, be proud of yourself, of your fellow Scouts and of your supporters!!!

Next year – lets do it again. Iron faster in the iron-man (practice on shirts), no disqualifications in the sailing (hmmm), no dunk (venturers) and pickup on the first round (scouts) in the man-overboard.  Easy!!!

Cheers

Roger

News from up North

Guys

This from up north – the Clarkes – James and Laura being ex- NTSS Scouts and Laser/Starling sailers at PBC, and Andrew and Fiona being ex-Leaders (Fiona being 1984 sailing Olympian) Michael and James were the crack S’burst Intermediates and Josh/Laura same in Junior.

They are all now with the Southern Cross Sea Scout Group in Tauranga as Venturers and Venturer leader (Andrew).

Go PBC and NTSS!!

Roger

From: Andrew and Fiona Clarke
To: Roger & Joanne Cook

Hi Rog,

Thanks for your txt.  We are just back (late ) from Auckland regional regatta up at Whangaparoa.  200+ kids there, plus adults = 300 odd for the weekend.  Wow it was big, and guess what, James and Laura helped our little unit to FIRST overall in aggregate sailing – bet the big shots like New Lynn and Hawke in the sailing.  Of course overall, they cleaned up when rowing, iron man etc was added into it, but I was pretty chuffed to win the sailing.

By the way, the weather was 23 degrees, and about 15 knots all weekend – you should move up!!

See you soon

Clarkie

Scouts: Zone Raft Race 2010

Guys

Congratulations to Ngati Toa for winning back the Kapiti-Coastal Raft Race Crown.

Best turnout in years with nine rafts from Levin, Otaki, Raumati, Mana (Ngati Toa) and Titahi Bay. Must have been over 60 Scouts and about 30 parents.

Perfect conditions on Porirua Harbour with a 10kn warm northerly blowing directly down the course – a huge advantage to those with sails!!  The raft build was brilliant with all Scouts showing excellent pioneering skills; the designs converging into last year’s Titahi Bay winning catamaran style.

Ngati Toa’s #1 crew (Jareth, Hannah, Torrie, Daniel, Callum) lead from start to finish with a square-rigged sail with their #2 crew (Chris H, Nicky, Joe, Jessica, Emma) following with a smaller sail. However, after a slow start in the more fickle air, Titahi Bay’s #1 crew with a spinnaker-like sail hit full speed and ran down the Ngati Toa #2 crew with about 150m to go. But by then, the race was over. Ngati Toa’s #3 crew (Brady, Joseph, Harry, Marcus, Matthew), came in fourth. Fifth was Titahi bay’s #2 crew with the Raumati 3 man crew without spinnaker coming in 6th.

Back up the course, lots of fun was being had by the last three rafts, Ngati Toa #4 (Ryan, Tom, Will, Rowan, Finn, Chris P), Otaki and Levin, with a few lessons learned as they broke up as lashings loosened.  Paddling failed, sails became anchors and swimming prevailed until the inevitable arrived with a tow behind the patrol boat.

Robbo,  now you know why Titahi Bay and Ngati Toa don’t use plastic drums – very fast but only when detached from the raft, which they are want to do!!

Lots of fun for the Leaders and parents as well. Ngati Toa launched it’s three rowing cutters – 21 sets of very tired arms last night, especially when the promised tow back upwind failed to eventuate (the organizer in the patrol boat was not bribed sufficiently) but the smiles on the faces of parents and kids made the pain all worthwhile. Yeah right!!!

Photos are already on the NTSS website http://ngatitoaseascouts.blogspot.com/

Again, congratulations to NGATI TOA and to all the participants and supporters – see you all again next year.

Roger

Scouts: Napier

Guys

I have just found out (recalled) that Napier run competitions as Venturer and Scout. We have 11 venturers and 26 Scouts going so that means for sailing we need at least 5 cutters – lets not do any maths on Sunbursts, but we will have the kayaks there.

I have just talked to John Roger – we can borrow the Blue speed machine and Tarapunga from Paraparaumu, and it looks like we might be okay for tow bars.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, we need 30 paddles (6 per cutter) for the Centipede race. We have a few but does anyone have access to dragon boat or waka paddles that we could borrow for Easter?

Roger

Scouts: Napier

Guys

I have copies of the Consent Forms and gear lists for you tomorrow night (Venturers were to get theirs tonight) but just in case you aren’t there, please print and bring consent form and $$$ next Wednesday or Thursday. No form, no $$$, NO GO!!!

Roger

A big thanks to Ngati Toa Sea Scouts

Roger, Josh, Amberlee

This is just a quick email to say another big thank you for hosting Redwood Scouts to a fantastic afternoon on Saturday.

You mentioned more than once how unfortunate it was that the wind prevented much sailing – but please be assured that our scouts had a fantastic time and are hard pressed to imagine any more fun and adventure.

It was also great to watch the Ngati Toa Scouts show how experienced and efficient they are when boating.  It is easy to see why Ngati Toa is considered one of the best Sea Scout Troops in the country.

So – one last time – thanks to you all for sharing your skills, time and equipment – truly appreciated.

Yours in scouting

Have a great week. Raft building next week.

Scouts: Napier Regatta - good and bad news. More transport needed

Hi Guys

Great news is that we have exact numbers for at least two rowing crews in each section, although not sure if they run a single Scout section or both Junior and Intermediate. Will find out today. N case you missed it, we are staying at the regatta venue den – oh, so easy!!!

Further to the message below to Venturers, bad news is that we are still two car load of seats short to get everyone up and back from Napier. Issue arises because several families are staying over or travelling further for the school holidays.  So if a parent(s) wants a holiday in Napier OR if anyone has a spare car they can lend us OR if a venturer wants to take their car but needs a full license co-driver, we do have Adults/Leaders that could fill those roles.

Please let me know ASAP.

Cheers

Scouts: Sunburst Regatta

Hi Guys

Good news is that the Sunburst regatta on Sunday 28 March (2 weeks) has been shifted from Worser Bay, Seatoun, to Onepoto, Porirua. That means another hour in bed for all of us.  Yay!!!!

I will be handing out the details for the regatta and also for the previous days raft race at Onepoto this coming Thursday.  As per usual, I will need to know ASAP who wants to attend, towbars, etc.

Cheers

Roger

Scouts: Today's regatta

Well Guys

You kids (and parents) continue to blow me away, taking success, fun, commitment and just plain human kindness and enjoyment to a new level each weekend.

Today’s Lowry Bay Regatta was the best I have been to – everyone having a row, everyone having a sail, most having a kayak, and that includes the Leaders and parents.

The results are below. What caught my eye today was:
·         Not how easily we won the rowing races but how we did it with style – being in the right place, rowing in time, smiling a lot.
·         The top five places in the Intermediate Sunburst showing how small differences in sail settings and how one sits in the boat makes huge differences in speed in these pretty near identical boats.
·         Emergence of Daniel M and Callum in the Intermediate ranks
·         Emergence of Nicky/Daniel A, Liam/Dain and Rowan/Will in the “watch the future” stakes.

Huge thanks to all the parent towies and chauffeurs, to Phil and Dianne in the patrol boat all day, to Randall for running the kayak racing, to Richard for volunteering to helm the parents in the open cutter race, and to all the parents that worked hard getting boats and kids into and out of the water.

Next regatta – two weeks time at Worser bay. Just Sunburst racing. Usually a select few. However, after todays sailing, I think that it will be more like the great hoards.

Cheers

Roger

Scouts: Urgent for Parents and Scouts: Decisions times for regattas

Guys

I am not going to mention the fantastic time we had this weekend. Diane I am sure will have congratulations for all involved (if she is still awake). I mowed the lawns when I got home.

More importantly, I need to know Thursday night (no later) who wants to go to Lowry Bay for the regatta this Sunday, including parents who can offer towbars and seats.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, Easter Regatta, Napier 2-4 (5) April. Is a full regatta like the local regattas but with swimming and ironman as well. First time last year and cleaned up nearly everything. Hoping for a big contingent again this year. Drive up Good Friday (10am departure) needing 7 towbars and lotsa seats. Come back Sunday evening or Monday for those that want to stay. Accom will be either at Westshore Den or Kennedy Park. Parents can stay with Scouts or at Motel. Need to know Thursday if want to come. Cost $100-$120.

Lost sails - found

Guys

Great news (sort of). The sails were found at St James. Number 1207 too similar to 1797 for a helpful parent.

We will get them back this weekend, and drop the jib into Brett for repair as soon as possible next week.

Guys
A week or so ago, Amberlee lost her black G-Shock watch. One was found by a parent or Leader. Do any of you recall what happened to this watch and if an owner was found?

Scouts: Lowry Bay regatta Sunday week

Guys
Please find attached for Sunday week. Another brilliant regatta and one for which we will need tow bars and seats as usual. Please let me know as soon as possible if you can help.
Note that we have a new false floor Sunburst so more kids on the water at any one time. Brilliant!!
